All-county, all-conference, qualify for state Tell a story of how you came to Cross Country. Did you/do you play other sports? When did you start running XC? When did you realize it was something you enjoy? I began cross country in eighth grade after my first time running Yorktown Roadrunners. I always played soccer before, but when I didn’t make the middle school soccer team I joined cross. I never wanted to run but my friend Cole begged me to run cross country with him so I tried it. My very first meet was at Muncie Northside and I won. At that point I realized I might be good at cross country. I’ve loved the sport of distance running ever since. What has been your favorite memory in XC? My favorite memories from cross country come from our annual team camps. The games, competitions, workouts, and free times around camp made spending that time with friends even better. What is your favorite XC workout? Tell a story of how you came to Cross Country. Did you/do you play other sports? When did you start running XC? When did you realize it was something you enjoy? I tried every sport as a kid, but never really enjoyed any of them. When I started XC in 6th grade, I really had no idea what it was. I thought it was just “speed training” that would help me get better at soccer. As it turned out, my Mom didn’t sign me up for soccer that year because she thought I hated it due to my experience last year (which I did, but I was spiteful). She forced me to finish out the season, so I made some friends and ended up somewhat enjoying it (but mainly I enjoyed not having to ride the bus). After my times dropped more and more the next few seasons, I started really loving the sport. Seeing my improvement over the years has been insane to me. What has been your favorite memory in XC? Otherwise, probably fast long runs, for a similar reason, but with a little more effort. Do you have any interesting pre-race rituals or favorite pre-race meals? Did you/do you play other sports? When did you start running XC? When did you realize it was something you enjoy? I didn’t start running cross country until the middle of 5th grade. I was watching our high school team compete in a meet, and it really motivated me to try running out. As soon as I started, even though I was just a kid, I fell in love with the sport, the community, and just everything about cross country. The cross country community has got to be the most welcoming of all sport communities. Anyone from anywhere is always supporting each other and finding ways to help each other improve. In fact, I’ve met some of my closest friends because of the cross country community. Now, I train and run full time for cross country and don’t enjoy anything else more.
What has been your favorite memory in XC? My favorite memory from cross country is the 2019 Delta Sectional. I was a freshman, but it was the first post season race other than conference I had even ran in highschool. There was a lot of pressure on us, but it was the first race we actually ran as a team and family. Yeah, winning sectional in 2019 was a bonus to the season, but as freshman being welcomed and being able to bond with all those guys was my favorite memory yet and was a main contributor to my high-school success .

Tell a story of how you came to Cross Country. Did you/do you play other sports? When did you start running XC? When did you realize it was something you enjoy? I started running XC in the 5th grade which was the earliest year it was offered. I grew up on a local golf course. As I kid when my parents tried to get me to play golf, I just enjoyed running to my ball or around the course racing from point A to point B. When I got older running became my outlet to help me with stress. I love the competitive nature. The family aspect and support from all the runners and parents is what made me never want to stop XC.
What has been your favorite memory in XC? Honestly there’s been so much over the best eight years. Nothing beats the community of XC between all of the runners and supporters. I would say one of the most meaningful memories of XC took place due to my absence. After last year’s sectional race, I was taking away in an ambulance. While I was in the hospital, I was sent pictures of a prayer circle that occurred for me with people from many different schools. I think this highlights the community of XC and how special it truly is. That meant more to me than many people know.
What is your favorite XC workout? It may sound a little crazy, but I love 1ks!
Do you have any interesting pre-race rituals or favorite pre-race meals? I have to have pasta the night before any race. On actual race day, I pray multiple times. It was something I learned to help with nerves and now I can’t run without doing it.

As a 3rd grader, I would go with my parents to pick up my older brother Blake from his middle school XC practices. I would stand at the fence and watch his team doing their drills and stretches and mimic what their coach was telling them to do. I went to all the XC meets growing up watching my brother run. When I got to 6th grade, I knew I wanted to run and be a part of the XC team. I have long distance runners in my family too. Running just comes naturally to me. What are some of your individual goals for your senior season? Some of my goals are to break 20 minutes and advance to semi-state.
Tell a story of how you came to Cross Country. Did you/do you play other sports? When did you start running XC? When did you realize it was something you enjoy? I actually didn't start running until my freshman year. Before running, the only sport I did was swimming. One day, one of the seniors on the swim team, who also ran XC, said I should join the team. I honestly just did it at first because my teammate said we got fed ice cream, breakfasts, and dinners. Though I joke about that a lot, it really is all the team things we do together that made me realize how much I enjoy XC. I never would have seen myself running every single day. But, now, I love it because I get to run with the people who are like family to me. I'm so glad I found XC because the people in the community are amazing and so supportive. I know, besides just my running goals, I have an entire team that has my best interest at heart.
What has been your favorite memory in XC? My favorite memory in XC has been winning county every year. Not just because we won, but because the county meet always seems to be the meet that brings out the best in our team. Everybody always rises up to the challenge and takes on the meet with the best attitude. Whether we're seeded to win or loose, we always commit to running our best race for the team. Just seeing everybody step up and put the team first is amazing.
What is your favorite XC workout? My favorite XC workout is thresholds. It took me a while to learn to love them, but I love the feeling of nailing a pace for multiple miles in a row. I think it's a great confidence booster and shows your endurance.
Do you have any interesting pre-race rituals or favorite pre-race meals? Before races I always have to have my shoes tied a certain tightness. Sometimes, I'll retie my shoes multiple times at the start line until I'm satisfied. I take this one for granted, but I also have to have my pre-race-night massage.
Do you have a favorite course you run at? Any particular reason why? My favorite course is the Taylor Wilderness. I like how spread out it is and it always feels like it goes by fast in the fields. My favorite part is the hill right after the 2k mark because I know that's my opportunity to surge and get ahead of the competition.
What type of team goals do you have for the rest of the season? As a team, I would like to win county again and advance to semi-state. We have a very young team, and that's really exciting because I get to watch all their hard work pay. Advancing to semi-state with this team would just be awesome because the experience of being with the there just can't be matched by anything else. I know the girls have been putting in the hard work. They've already been so impressive to watch, stepping up to the challenge, and I can't wait to see just how good they'll be this year.
Are you interested in running after HS (college or otherwise) and what are your plans after HS? I definitely want to continue sports in college after high school. I want to study in the field of exercise science because I know sports will always be a part of my life. I want to help other people find the same success and enjoyment that I have been able to experience.
